10% off Kailua Animal Clinic spay and neuter packages for dogs and cats! We are continuing our discount on our spay and neuter packages to encourage responsible pet owners to afford this critical procedure. Our spay/neuter packages include the surgery, anesthesia, use of state-of-the-art anesthetic monitoring equipment, IV fluid support throughout the procedure, pain medication, e-collar (cone), and overnight hospitalization (required for females only). Prior to surgery, dogs must be current on Distemper-Parvovirus vaccination, have received a Bordetella vaccination and negative fecal test within the past 6 months, and have had a negative heartworm test within the past year (unless the dog is under 1 year of age). Cats must be current on FVRCP vaccination and have had a negative fecal test for parasites within the past 6 months. If your pet is not currently a patient of ours, they will need to have a pre-surgical exam. This exam and the follow-up suture removal is included in the surgery fee. Any health issues examined and/or treated for at the pre-op exam, or any vaccinations and lab tests necessary to meet the surgery requirements will be charged for at regular fees. Pets must be deemed healthy, which may require an additional blood test in certain circumstances. All pets must be presented clean and free of external parasites; there is a charge to treat dirty or infested pets otherwise. Pets must be 6 months of age. Pregnant or in heat females and cryptorchid males do not qualify. Any additional care after 24 hours will be charged for accordingly. This offer is valid through December 31, 2012. Coupon must be presented at the time of pre-surgical exam for discount to apply. Not combinable with other discounts. Dealing with Fear Aggression in Dogs

Dogs with fear aggression usually start out being underconfident around strangers when young, backing away from them and barking at the same time, potentially running away when approached. Dogs that have been hit or kicked may be “hand shy” or wary of feet. Fear aggressive dogs more commonly bite when strangers are not facing them, such as when they turn or walk away. As the dog grows older, he learns that intimidation by barking or snapping works in keeping strangers away. This confidence may be enough that the dog no longer shows obvious fear. January 2012 Current Events
Thank you for celebrating our 25th anniversary with us at our OPEN HOUSE! On November 12th, we hosted an Open House featuring behind-the-scenes tours of our clinic, demonstrations, refreshments, free pedicures, door prizes, and lots of giveaways! We were glad to see many of you and hope to do this again next year. It's been a great 25 years; thank you for being a part of our clinic family!

The Kailua High School Career Fair was held on Friday, November 18th, and Kailua Animal Clinic staff set up a booth representing careers in veterinary medicine. We had the pleasure of speaking to interested students about the pathways into veterinary medicine and the many roles within the veterinary clinic. We also encouraged students to consider the many career options available to veterinarians including clinical practice, research, public health, zoo and aquarium health, food safety, military positions, and environmental health.

This past October our vets at Kailua Animal Clinic have kept busy donating their time and surgical skills to spay and neuter the many puppy mill dogs being fostered on the windward side of the island. Most of these lucky dogs are being adopted by their foster families. Kailua Animal Clinic is a proud supporter of the Hawaiian Humane Society and we are happy to help out in caring for these mistreated animals from the recent puppy mill bust.
